you decide!

Which is stupider:

a) the fact that the show "Dance Moms" exists
b) the fact that my sisters and mom and I can't stop watching it

?

Also, I saw a pin today on pinterest (been too long since I've complained about that, huh!) showing frozen yogurt drops, as in, take your yogurt, pipe it onto a cookie sheet, freeze it, and eat it. Why do you need to freeze your yogurt in small drops? A 100 calorie thing of Yoplait light is too much for you to handle so you have to portion it out? Or you just think it's cute to waste 20 minutes of your life freezing little yogurt drops?

I'm kind of tired tonight. Can you tell?

I would like to be called Lady Katherine now please.

I did it.

I survived my first year* of graduate school!

This weekend I also:

planted a garden consisting of three tomato plants and one packet of carrot seeds (baby steps)
bought two rugs at IKEA
ate with chopsticks and was really bad at it
randomly ended up at Independence Hall after the chopstick experience
watched 5 episodes of "Downton Abbey."

Speaking of which, OMG. I can't get enough of that show. I finished season 2 (Matthew and Mary! You're killing me!!!! Sybil!!! Branson!!! BATES!!!) and now have nothing to watch, which is probably good since I should be reading papers or attempting to understand surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy or something. Now that I'm done with classes, I get to work in the lab full time, which is what I'll be doing for the rest of my grad school time, plus TAing here and there. I'm quite excited about it!

I suppose I should go to bed since now I'm a responsible lab worker and go to campus at 8:30 AM instead of noon...I think I'll miss those no class until 12:00 days...

*Academic year I guess? Things get murky after the first year since I'm not in class anymore, and there's no real mark of "now I'm a second/third/fourth/fifth/sixth year!" except for new students coming in.
>EDIT: this was written at 9:45 PM Mountain Time = almost midnight Eastern Time...I don't go to bed at 9:45.

so over it

Aaron and I tried watching "Glee" yesterday after a three month long hiatus. About 15 minutes in (after they had an MJ sing/dance off in a darkened parking lot with prep school boys in blazers) we looked at each other and were like, this is lame.

I don't think we'll ever watch "Glee" again. Funny it was MJ that did us in, and not the episode that was entirely about underage drinking or the episode about sex with no consequences. Actually, I think it was more the Christmas episode of "Community" that ruined it for me. I just can't take talk of regionals seriously anymore.

Have any other shows we should watch?

what a show!

I'm pretty sure I watched Arthur up through high school. I probably still would if we had any sort of cable (not even PBS or Spanish soap operas at our house!).

Oh, and: computer is fixed thanks to Aaron making the trek from Penn to the Apple store in Center City and finagling his way into a new hard drive for free! Yay Aaron! Yay recovered documents! Yay significantly improved outlook on life!

have you seen this yet?

4 clips of Avatar: The Legend of Korra

sooooexcited. But I haven't been able to find an actual air date yet. When I was stranded in the Dallas-Fort Worth airport all night, I watched the last three episodes of this series via my mom's Netflix account. Is there anything more epic than the agni kai between Azula and Zuko? Than the showdown between Phoenix King Ozai and Aang? I submit that there is not. Except maybe this exchange, which is probably my favorite:

Sokka: My first girlfriend turned into the moon.
Zuko: That's rough buddy.

too much hulu

The guy in "Terra Nova" reminds me a lot of Will Schuster from "Glee". This makes me think they're going to burst into song right after they figure out the structure of a natural product and then synthesize a kilogram batch of it in two hours to draw away the evil reptile/bird/dinosaurs.
Sometimes, I think I'm obnoxious to watch shows with.

one more thing:

Maybe I am a teeny bit in love with the troubled and misunderstood Prince Zuko.
That's all.

currently less than threeing*:

a. Candles. Not sure why, but it gives me much joy to light the little candle I bought at Smiths when I get home.
b. "Doogie Howser", the ever-so ridiculous early 90's tv show about the sixteen year old doctor. Starring Dr. Horrible, aka Neil Patrick Harris. I'm sort of in love with him. Too bad he doesn't like girls.
c. ECCE, the amazing molecular modeling software. See last post.
d. Curry. My roommates and I made some last night, and then I got to have the leftovers for lunch today. Delish!

What are your current obsessions?

*Laura asked me what this meant, and it occurred to me that probably no one but me knows...people type things like i <3 you because "<3" looks like a heart on its side, and if you say what those symbols are it's "less than three". Therefore (I feel like I'm making a mathematical proof), "currently less than threeing" is the equivalent of "currently loving".
Whew. That was a long explanation.

"Did you give an angry Cuban my home number?"

Well...I was going to post about the Shakespeare Festival, but it's been too long and Jody wrote up a lovely post detailing all of our adventures including, but not limited to, dance parties broken up by sketchy 40 year old men in church parking lots, fun with glue sticks, late night ice cream runs, fake crushes on actors, and fabulous plays. Read all about it here.

In other news...

I forgot how much I love "House" until Josh and I started watching it again, and wow, I love "House". I was so incredibly upset when everyone quit/got fired, and now I can't wait for Chase and Foreman and Cameron to be back (we just started season four). And can I just say that I absolutely love House and Wilson's relationship? And also that I love Wilson? I am almost inspired to be a doctor....almost...except for the whole needles, blood, death, trauma, an excessive amount of schooling, etc. I think I'll stick to chemistry.

Also, all of a sudden I'm very curious about what's going on when I'm at the dentist (got a cavity filled today). What exactly is that big gun thing they stick in your mouth after you've gotten a cavity filled? I'm sure it's supposed to dry/set/whatever the cavity filler, but by what means? What does it do? And what exactly is it in the molding that makes it go from pink to white when it dries? What chemical is that? And how exactly does anesthesia work? How do the chemicals knock out your nerves? And why does your lip feel fat and your face swollen? Anyone secretly a dental hygienist or in dental school who can satisfy my curiosity?

And another thing, after reading this post (thanks Bob!), I am re-inspired to make goals. I found the paper on which I'd written down my goals from last fall (or maybe end of fall semester?), and it turns out I did pretty well. No US national semi-final for ballroom this year, but we were the next couple in for amateur standard. And I pretty much did awful with my financial goals, but I didn't actually try on those ones...anyway, classes start in less than a month, I'm moving into a new apartment (same complex, different building), and I think it would be smart to use this time of change to make new goals for the next year. What those will be I have not yet decided. I'll post something later this week.

Last thing: can we please please please know which numbers we're in next year for team? I'm dying to know if I got any of my requested numbers, and we were supposed to get an email last week telling us and I've been checking my email every few hours just in case it got sent and waiting is making me type sentences with far too many clauses and not enough commas...

Happy Monday everyone :)

Let it snow baby, let it reindeer.

Happy 200th Post to Me!*

Christmas of 08 was quite enjoyable. I got so many kitchen-related items that Becky asked if it was Christmas or my wedding. ha. I was happy though: blender, glass cake pans with LIDS, stainless steel pan, and a KNIFE BLOCK!!! I'm leaving it all in my basement though, until I move into my cute condo/apartment with washer/dryer in Aprilish. I also got a new straightner, thank goodness because my Chi has been on the fritz since May...you had to jiggle it around and it would often shut off randomly mid-use. Big present for my family: ROCK FREAKING BAND II. Oh yeah, it's been a blast. I made a girl named Quinn Vierge from Paris; she is totally rad.
We braved the snowstorm and made it to my grandparents' house for Christmas lunch with the rest of mom's side extended family. I love going to their house. Great food, playing games...although in recent years we haven't really had that much fun playing them...everyone's too cranky or too distracted. Anyway, it was fun.
New obsession grâce à Christmas break: House. On DVD. Becky got season 1 for her birthday (Dec 17th) and season 2 for Christmas, Jeff got season 3 for Christmas, so I have plenty of viewing material!!! It's so much fun. I've been missing watching tv shows on DVD since Gilmore Girls fired Amy Sherman Palladino and then got cancelled.

It's been a great holiday so far. I look forward to much more funness to come...

*Disclaimer: If you actually tried adding up how many posts I have based on what my archive says, you'd get less than 200 because I don't actually publish all of my posts....but I still have written up 200 of them, and I am very proud of this accomplishment

Television Without Pity

I'm convinced.

This is not a dance competition anymore. It's a "who's got the best personality/who's the hottest/who does Nigel like the most" competition.

I cannot believe how blatantly manipulated everything is. I do not think it's any coincidence that Kourtney and Matt got a hiphop and a salsa routine, two routines where you have to get "down and dirty" when the judges tell Matt week after week that he's "too stiff" and "too high" (which is absolute bull crap...oh my greatness, Matt is such a gorgeous dancer). Matt could dance the most amazing routine in the world and the judges would still hate it. They're so predictable. Every week they tell Matt he sucks. Every week they tell Will he's a genius. Every week they tell Jessica she's not as good as Will. Every week they overly praise Katee and Joshua. EVERY FLIPPING WEEK. If you watched the first episode the whole way through, you could just skip the judges' remarks for the rest of the season. And how about the fact that Mary seems to have forgotten that she's the ballroom expert? When was the last time she made a comment that demonstrated that? All she ever says is what Nigel says with some screams thrown in for fun.
Another thought: can we please fire all of the hair/makeup/costume people? Honestly, we have had some seriously hideous things parading on stage (like Katee's hair from tonight's episode. What were they thinking?!) Oh, and how about the half dresses from last week? Real classy, Nigel, real classy. If you look at me from a certain angle, it looks like I'm not wearing anything at all! Yay! Great for family tv!!! (and this is coming from a ballroom dancer who's seen her share of skimpy costumes so I have a really high tolerance for that kind of thing. But on prime time? Come on, my little sisters watch this show.)

GAhhhh, it makes me so angry. I'm so sad. My favorite show is not so favorite anymore.

But I'll keep watching it anyway.
